We caught up with Mel Wells, International Speaker and Bestselling Author of ‘The Goddess Revolution’, for Eleven questions. She is Hay House’s youngest author and dedicates her time to helping women worldwide. Mel shared her story with us and what inspired her to start the goddess revolution, how she spends most of her time and some exciting things she has in store for 2018.
1. Tell us about what you do?
The Goddess Revolution is all about helping women to end the war on their own bodies. In a world of social media, ‘fitspiration’ and airbrushed selfies, so many find themselves in an obsession with perfection. My goal is to break that cycle of comparison and negative talk and to help women resolve body issues, eat healthily for their bodies and restore body freedom.
2. Where did you journey begin?
My journey began when I was working as an actress and model. I felt so insecure and paranoid about my body that my relationship with food became unhealthy as a result, swinging from restriction, to binge-eating and everything in between. When my dad fell ill with cancer, I knew something else needed to change, so I started learning about health and nutrition, but while that gave me a better understanding of food, it didn’t heal my relationship with it. That’s when I decided to throw away the scales once and for all and start focusing on listening to my body instead.
3. Why is meditation such an important part of your life?
It sets me up for the day and makes me a much calmer, more open minded person to be around. I notice a huge difference on the days I meditate to the days I don’t.
4. What does a day in the life of Mel look like?
Just recently, my boyfriend and I have joined #4amclub – going to bed early and waking up at 4am so we can make the most of our day. The first thing I do after waking is meditate and then crack open my laptop to begin work; usually writing or planning content for future courses, videos or events. At about 9am, we stop for coffee and breakfast (usually avocado toast or a smoothie). In the afternoon, we head out to explore some of the beautiful natural locations around us, taking inspiration and shooting photos or videos for Instagram or YouTube. By early evening, we’re ready to wind down, so it’s back home to watch the sunset from our balcony and enjoy dinner together.
5. What do not a lot of people realise about you and your industry, but they probably should?
That we spend most of the time behind a laptop, and frequently banging our heads against the walls with tech difficulties – Ha!
6. What’s your favourite 3 sustainable food brands or products?
I live in Bali so I eat a lot of local sustainable foods, I don’t buy brands as such, just buy from the markets and local communities. So that’s pretty sustainable!
7. Do you have a morning routine? (what morning routines do you think are must have essentials)
I’m pretty low maintenance when it comes to beauty routines, but my 20-minute morning meditation is non-negotiable! I feel at my best when I start my day happy, centred and calm.
8. You’re given the gift of £1000, but must spend it in the next 24 hours – what do you do?
Book an adventure! I usually spend my money on flights and Air BnBs so we can have amazing experiences. I don’t care about gifts or ‘things’ as such anymore, it’s all about an adventure for me. Something I can create amazing memories from and look back on.
9. What’s your life’s purpose?
My goal is to elevate and inspire women to get in touch with who they really are and develop the self-confidence to pursue their dreams. I do believe we are collectively growing in consciousness and it’s my passion to spread that message and ensure it reaches as many women as possible.
10. What’s next for you and your journey?
I have just started the last live round of my signature program, The Academy, which will run until November. After that, the next 12 months has in store: a new course, a new book, a TED talk, a huge Live event (The Self Love Summit!) multiple Goddess Retreats and a Goddess Ambassador Training!
11. What one small change can we all make today?
Speak to yourself in the same way you would a friend. Be kinder in your thoughts, words and actions to yourself. Ask yourself ‘Is this something that someone who loves themselves would do or say?’ When we learn to cultivate self love, we can deepen our connection with ourselves and others, and this has the power to change the world. It starts with us taming that voice inside our heads and making friends with ourselves.
