Sadly most natural and organic makeup brands that are marketed as such, are neither of those things. Organic is not yet a certification that is monitored in the beauty industry, so frustratingly, a brand can label themselves as ‘organic’ and not be. Our skin is our biggest organ, so what we put onto it, is just as important as what we put into it.
We’ve set out to find, test and share with you our top pick makeup brands, which are free from chemical nasties, use eco-friendly natural ingredients, and never test their products on animals.
But we also want quality. Not only did these brands have to tick the natural and organic boxes; we also want to ensure that they are brands you’ll love. With great coverage, consistency and staying power – You won’t just find a list of eco brands below, you’ll also find brands that truly work.
Green People, a UK brand, were founded in 1997 by a mother who wanted the best natural products for her baby. They create luxury organic beauty products that aim to bring your skin back into its natural balance. They specialise in catering for all skin types, including the ultra-sensitive. What’s best is that Green People are an environmentally conscious company that puts its ethics ahead of its profits.
What we loved: The coverage. From a foundation to a lipstick, the makeup was subtle yet solid in its coverage. And from a conscious business perspective, Green People are the only cosmetics company to be independently certified by three different certification bodies – which just goes to show how much they are championing their beliefs.
Our favourite product: The tinted moisturiser. Never before have so many positive comments been made about our faces than when we were wearing this incredibly subtle, yet incredibly effective tinted moisturiser.
W3llpeople are an American brand, with self-care at the heart of their organisation. Founded by an elite makeup artist, cosmetic dermatologist and treehugging entrepreneur (a description we just adore!) they really give a damn about our skin – our largest organ, which absorbs about 80% of what we put on it.
What we love: How reasonably priced it is. You can pretty much make the switch to your staple makeup bag items for under £100. Their ingredients are also pretty awesome – They use zero artificial chemicals, preservatives or petroleums. What their makeup does contain however is an advanced botanical complex of organic aloe, organic chamomile and organic green tea. What a powerhouse of plant treats for your skin.
Our favourite product: Their mascara. Hands down the best natural mascara on the market.
Zao is a French brand, founded by David Reccole, with over 10 years experience in the organic cosmetics industry. Not only is the brand all about no nasties, organic and enriching active ingredients, but the packaging and casing are all made from bamboo.
What we love: The packaging was so well designed and looked incredible. Not only did it look beautiful in our makeup bags, but it’s refillable and sustainable too. The whole range, packaging, ethos and designs have been incredibly well thought out.
Our favourite product: The lipsticks – long lasting, beautiful lip-popping colours with a vast array of shades to choose from.
PHB (Pure, British, Handmade) Ethical Beauty is a British run family business with a range of award winning ethical beauty products. They offer one of the largest ranges of Natural, Vegan, Cruelty-Free and even certified Halal beauty products. They’re all made in the UK and even hand blended in their family owned facility.
What we love: The number of products in their range. A beauty queen’s treasure chest. But most importantly their values and championing those of a true conscious business. 20% of their profits goes to charity and their website contains endless information about everything they do to ensure that they operate as ethically as possible.
For example; some of the minerals in their cosmetics are sourced from India where they are mined ethically. The owners of the mine help to fund schools and daycare centres, so that the quality of life for their employees is fair. The Organic Shea Butter in their products comes from a women’s Co-op in West Africa.
Our favourite product: Their liquid eyeliner. It performed brilliantly and was easy to apply, lasted all day and overall the product lasted for months.
Out of everyone at the Well + Happy HQ who tried and tested the natural and organic beauty brands, 3 are now newly converted to using natural make-up. The others already used natural makeup but definitely have a few new favourites in their makeup bag.
